BOOK OF THE MONTH for April 2014 - Time to Jump

BOOK OF THE MONTH for April 2014 - Time to Jump

A timely, populist and controversial book that explains in an easy to understand and chatty style what problems face Britain in the UK and how they can be solved.
In this book, controversial Member of the European Parliament David Campbell Bannerman puts forward a radical and creative alternative to UK membership of the European Union.
Unlike many dry political tracts, this book takes a lively and engaging look at the awkward  and dangerous position Britain has got itself into. Drawing on his background in the real world outside of politics - as a leading communications strategist across industry, commerce and government - Campbell Bannerman explains in easy to understand terms and with a chatty writing style exactly how it is possible to leave the EU, why the UK must leave and what we would do instead and what the benefits and freedoms outside the EU are.
With the help of carefully gathered facts, figures, quotes and opinions, Campbell Bannerman argues it is time for Britain to Jump out of the EU and into a position that he has dubbed “EEA Lite”. This is a groundbreaking proposal positioned between the EEA Agreement that Norway enjoys and Swiss bilateral trade arrangements. He charts how Britain could take the EEA as a working basis and lighten it up to suit Britain’s unique strengths and needs. He sees the UK leaving the EU Single Market, but retain full access to it for UK exporters for the 8% of the UK economy trading with the EU. The 92% of the UK economy has nothing to do with EU trade, but is still forced to apply its laws will be liberated from billions in red tape. EEA Lite will allow the UK to bring in Swiss-style tougher visa-based immigration controls for EU national and to negotiate its own UK trade deals and to re-embrace the Commonwealth.
David paints a picture of the UK as  a new Singapore sitting off Europe, but thinking globally.

NEW EBOOK - Bigfoot in Michigan (Cryptid Casebook)

NEW EBOOK - Bigfoot in Michigan (Cryptid Casebook)

The gigantic upright ape known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch is usually associated with the Pacific Northwest, but over the past century and a half there have been a surprising number of sightings from the state of Michigan.

In this book cryptid expert Larry Jaffer reviews the evidence for this mysterious beast and comes to some surprising conclusions.

On the opposite side of the Lower Peninsular at Monroe on 13 August 1965 the 17 year old Christine van Acker and her mother Ruth were driving along a woodland road. As they came around a bend they saw a large, hairy creature standing upright beside the road. The two women later estimated it to have been about seven feet tall and to weigh around 400 pounds. The long arms were clearly visible, but neither woman could remember much about its head or face. Startled, Christine tried to accelerate away, but in her panic stepped on the brake instead and stalled the car just feet from the Bigfoot.
The Bigfoot walked up to the car, thrust its hand through the open driver's window and struck Christine on the head. Both women were screaming loudly, and the older woman leaned on the car horn in an effort to frighten the beast away. That seemed to work as it stepped back and then walked off. Christine found she had a black eye and other bruising on her head, but the women were otherwise unharmed.

Some researchers have suggested that what appears to have been an attack by the Bigfoot on Christine van Acker may have been a response to what it thought was an attack on itself. From the Bigfoot's point of view a car had come out of nowhere, stopped just feet away and had perhaps glanced off the creature as it passed.

Cryptids are animals, or plants, which are believed by some people to exist, but which have not been accepted as real by the wider scientific community. These cryptids are animals which have been seen, and sometimes photographed, but for which no definitive evidence has been This series of Cryptid Casebooks explores the world of the cryptids.

NEW EBOOK - Marozi - Africa's Spotted Lion

NEW EBOOK -  Marozi - Africa's Spotted Lion

Lurking in the forested uplands of East Africa there is said to be a species of big cat that as yet science refuses to accept - the Marozi.

Often described as being rather like a small, spotted lion, the Marozi is rather more distinct than that. Unlike lowland lions it lives in densely forested hills where big game such as antelope and zebra are absent. Unlike the leopard, which does live in those forests, the Marozi does not climb trees and rather than being a solitary animal it moves in pairs or small groups.

Evidence for the Marozi began to emerge from the forests as early as 1903 and there is even the skin of one in London’s Natural History Museum. Despite a wealth of evidence supporting the reality of this beast the scientific establishment resolutely refuses to accept that it exists.

In this book cryptid expert Larry Jaffer reviews the evidence for this mysterious beast and comes to some surprising conclusions.

1066 Harold’s Way - A Guidebook to the New Long Distance Footpath from London to Hastings

1066 Harold’s Way - A Guidebook to the New Long Distance Footpath from London to Hastings

Key note: Written by an experienced walker and historian, this book follows the new “Harold’s Way” footpath route through London, Kent and Sussex.
1066 Harold’s Way is a new 100 mile long distance walk from Westminster Abbey to Battle Abbey, East Sussex tracing the probable route of King Harold’s journey to the Battle of Hastings.
1066 Harold’s Way creates an alternative north – south destination for walkers and is to be seen as an option to existing long distance footpaths such as the North Downs Way and the South Downs Way to the west. Perhaps this epic, historic, emotive and challenging walk.
The Walk has been produced with the support of Kent County Council, Sussex County Council and Stagecoach buses, and in association with The Long Distance Walkers Association, Kent Area Ramblers and Rother Ramblers.
This book follows the Walk, breaking it down into 10 bite-sized chunks for leisure walkers, with each section ending at a public transport link to take the walker back to the start. The difficulty of each section is carefully appraised, maps are included along with historical data on the events of 1066 and notes about sights passed by the walker.

About the Author

David Clarke was involved in creating the “1066 Harold’s Way” footpath. He is an experienced walker and historian who has done much to reappraise the military skills and decisions of Harold in that fateful autumn of 1066 when the future of England hung in the balance.

New Ebook - Lancelot - The Truth behind the Legend

Of all the Knights of the Round Table, none is so famous as Sir Lancelot. He is both the finest of the Arthurian knights, and the worst. He is the champion of the Round Table, and the reason for its destruction. He is loyal, yet treacherous. Noble, but base. His is a complex character that combines the best and worst of the world of chivalry in one person.
I have decided to go back into the murky background of this problematic figure to try to track him down once and for all. What I have found might surprise you.

NEW EBOOK - Niall of the Nine Hostages (Celtic Twilight) [Kindle Edition]

NEW EBOOK -  Niall of the Nine Hostages (Celtic Twilight) [Kindle Edition]

The mighty warrior king Niall Noígíallach dominates the twilight world between history and legend. He was one of the greatest of the High Kings of Ireland in prehistoric days, but one of the least known to modern historians. He gave rise to the powerful and widespread O'Neil (Ui Neill) dynasty of rulers, but even the century in which he lived is obscure. He was a pagan, but his reign prepared the way for Christianity.
That Niall of the Nine Hostages did live and did rule at least part of Ireland nobody doubts, but how powerful he really was and how he got his famous sobriquet "of the Nine Hostages" remain utterly obscure.
In this book historian Oliver Hayes goes back to the original legends, old manuscripts and seeks to disentangle fact from legend to reveal the true character and career of Niall of the Nine Hostages.

About the Author
Oliver Hayes has written several books, ebooks and magazine articles about British history. His grandfather was from Ireland, his grandmother from Wales and he himself lives in England - giving him a special overview of the historical nations of Britain.

Knights of Droven - Author Notes

Knights of Droven    -    Author Notes

1946 - the carnage of war still remains. One church gives evidence of its destruction, its broken shell allowing the past into the present. Droven was once a part of our shores and swamped by the sea in centuries past. Its masters now intend to be resurrected into all of Anglia and beyond.

This is a story of childhood memories, of adventure, war and valour. Of love and compassion, good over evil as seven children find a way to this evil past; a journey entrusting them with an impossible task which brings them to maturity and away from childhood things.

Authors comments.

To any who may recall or have read about the post war years one will know of the hardships faced in those times. Children had a playground of bombed out buildings, imaginations enough to write several books.

This story is a mix of fact and fiction. The heroes are based on childhood friends and, apart from Edna and Dennis, I have changed their names. I have not given the main characters too much detail, relying on each reader to add their own impression. Edna is my sister, my pride and joy, and always will be. Pakefield and its church stand today as it has for ages and is mentioned in the doomsday book. The shore that runs out from the boundary of the church, now a few hundred yards, once spread for over two miles. Droven is in all parts fiction although the shelters to its doorway existed until only a few years ago.

In writing the book I was surprised to find how close I came to local myths or old sea-farers tales, the flooding of Dunwich just up the coast is a matter of fact and its bells have been known to sound under the waves. Crazy Mary still haunts the cliffs and in the past a floating Inn with lights blazing has been seen by fishermen.

NEW EBOOK - The Lost Tomb of King Arthur (Celtic Twilight)

NEW EBOOK -  The Lost Tomb of King Arthur (Celtic Twilight)

In about the year 1190 monks at Glastonbury Abbey in Somerset claimed that they had found the tomb of King Arthur. The discovery is today routinely dismissed as a crude hoax worked by monks greedy for the money that would come from a stream of pilgrims visiting the tomb. But was it a hoax? And if Arthur was not buried in Glastonbury, where was he buried?
In this book historian Oliver Hayes goes back to original records of the find, including eyewtiness accounts to assess if this was a hoax, a genuine mistake or the real thing. He assesses how likely it was that Arthur would have been buried at Glastonbury, the motives of those involved in the discovery and takes a long, cold look at the evidence. And he comes to some startling conclusions.

NEW EBOOK - Titanic : The Rescue Mission

While the RMS Titanic was sinking more than a dozen ships were racing to the rescue. This is the story of the rescue mission, including the search for bodies that followed.
The story of the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic is well known, but less well known today are the frantic efforts made by more than a dozen ships to get to her to rescue her passengers and crew. Although the Cunard liner “Carpathia” was first on the scene, she was joined by three other ships within a couple of hours, and others were on their way.
We read about the Russian cook preparing vast gallons of vegetable soup for survivors, the rescue ship that nearly hit an iceberg itself and the confusion over the radio waves as messages were sent, lost or misinterpreted. Above all we read of the gallant efforts of hundreds of seamen desperate to obey the rules of the sea and go to the rescue.
Oliver Hayes has gone back to contemporary newspaper reports, personal letters and the official inquiries held on both sides of the Atlantic to research this book. The result is a meticulously researched volume detailing the exciting story of the rescue mission to save the Titanic.
The original painting “Carpathia to the Rescue” featured on the cover is available as a print signed by the artist.

NEW BOOK - The Future's Bright, the Future's Global

NEW BOOK -  The Future's Bright, the Future's Global

If Britain is to take control of its destiny it had better hurry up. Time is running out.

This important new study looks at the economic, regulatory and demographic challenges facing Britain in the early 21st Century. The author argues that a dynamic new global market has opened up right at the time that the EU market is becoming more regulatory. And Britain is being dragged down by the EU at precisely the time it should be setting out to embrace the world.

While the future trend among most nations, certainly those that enjoy free trade, is to become more intertwined with trade and commerce while ditching cumbersome international bodies overlooking these agreements, Britain is stuck in the sclerotic embrace of the EU with its heavy regulations, anti-free trade policies and oppressive government controls.

In essence this is a story about the rise of global trade a relative to the decline of the EU region. It will look forward to 2050, to economic and population predications. It shows that the UK needs to act fast to benefit from the changing world.

NEW BOOK - Why We Should Opt Out

A short booklet that seeks to examine under Protocol 36 those European Union Police and Criminal Justice Measures into which the Home Office has indicated a desire to 'opt in'. The evaluation focuses on measures with potential negative consequences for freedom, and measures which the United Kingdom would manage better outside of European Court of Justice (ECJ) auspices.

FIRST EBOOK SALE OF MARCH - The Battle of Otford (776)

FIRST EBOOK SALE OF MARCH - The Battle of Otford (776)

A much overlooked Dark Age battle brought to life. Fought between the Kingdom of Mercia and the Kingdom of Kent, this was a surprise victory for Kent due to careful tactical arrangements.

The battle fought at Otford in Kent pitched King Egbert II of Kent against a much larger invading army of Mercians. The invaders sought to outflank the main Kentish defences at Rochester by crossing the unguarded ford at Otford, but Egbert got there first and the two armies clashed in the waters of the River Darent.

The battle was fought between armies that rode to war, but fought on foot in the typically English battle formation known as the shield wall. Fighting with spear, sword and shield the outnumbered men of Kent held the Mercians at the ford, then launched a carefully judged flank attack that tumbled the enemy back in confusion and won an unexpected victory against the odds.

In this book historian Rupert Matthews outlines the reasons for the war and gives detailed notes on English weaponry and tactics of the time before describing the events of the battle itself and its aftermath.
