SALES BOOM - Wishford Station, Stations of the GWR

SALES BOOM - Wishford Station, Stations of the GWR

We have recently enjoyed a boom in sales for this book and have ordered a reprint to meet the surge in demand.

Wishford Station stood in Wiltshire on the main line from Salisbury to Bristol. For many years it was a thriving village station handling freight, passengers and livestock, but it closed in 1955 and is now no more.

In this book local resident Terry Waldron looks in detail at the history of Wishford Station. He traces the building of the line, the construction of the station and the gradual expansion as the line was doubled, the station enlarged and facilities improved. He looks at the staff who worked here, the locomotives and rolling stock. The book also covers the reasons for the decline in business and the eventual decision to close the station.

This book started from a comment in the Great Wishford village website where they were looking for when the station opened and closed. As with the previous research the intent was to get back to source documentation rather than to re-write what others had done and by doing this much new information has been found, some from talking to local people but mostly from records offices and libraries. In addition to the book he is in the process of building an N Gauge model of the railway with an intent to run scale length trains (where practical) and to a timetable based around the 1947 to 1951 period.

This book is one of the Stations of the Great Western Railway series of books produced by Bretwalda that looks in detail at the stations of that great British railway company.

About the Author
Terry Waldron was born in the small Wiltshire village of Minety in 1948 and like many children of that era had the obligatory Hornby train set.
Like many boys of that time he wanted to work on the railway, preferably as a train driver, this was not to be so as steam was in its decline as was the works at Swindon. He almost always had some form of train set or model railway, even though this was not avidly pursued during the early years of marriage. But this was further pursued in modelling in O Gauge for many years.
His first ventures into research was to assist Paul Burkhalter for his book on Devonport Dockyard Railway.

NEW EBOOK - Patterson-Gimlin Film - Fake or Fact (Cryptid Casebook)

NEW EBOOK - Patterson-Gimlin Film - Fake or Fact (Cryptid Casebook)

In this book researcher Larry Jaffer investigates the famous Patterson-Gimlin Film that was shot in 1967 and which purports to show a Bigfoot, or Sasquatch.
The film remains the clearest moving picture of what is claimed to be a Bigfoot. Unlike many other films it lasts more than a second or two and the creature is not obscured by trees, shadows or poor light conditions. Quite the contrary, the subject of this film walks across an area of open ground in direct, bright sunlight. It is clearly visible and can be studied in detail.
The Bigfoot seen in this film has become known as "Patty". This is a female version of the surname of the man who shot the movie - Roger Patterson. It was coined to distinguish the creature shown in this footage from other Bigfoot. The female designation was chosen as the film shows the creature has clearly defined female breasts.
Over the years the film has been analysed hundreds of times both by people determined to show it is a fake and others wanting to prove it factually shows a real Bigfoot. Neither side in the debate has been able to prove their case simply by looking at the film. In this book we look at the circumstantial evidence around the film. When was it shot? Why was Roger Patterson there? Could Roger Patterson be trusted? Did Patterson behave in a suspicious manner?
By looking at the circumstantial evidence this book comes to definitive conclusions that have eluded those who have studied only the film.

Cryptids are animals, or plants, which are believed by some people to exist, but which have not been accepted as real by the wider scientific community. These cryptids are animals which have been seen, and sometimes photographed, but for which no definitive evidence has been This series of Cryptid Casebooks explores the world of the cryptids.

About the Author
Larry Jaffer has long had an interest in the fortean mysteries that surround us. He grew up in the Surrey when the Surrey Puma hit the headlines, and went out in search of that elusive beast - without success. Since then he has researched a myriad of other cryptids, including Sasquatch, the sea serpent, the Beast of Bodmin and others. He has also investigated UFO sightings and tracked down numerous ghosts and poltergeists. He has a voluminous archive of witness interviews, photos and other data to back up his writings on the subjects of the unusual, paranormal and downright odd.

NEW EBOOK - The Battle of Nibley Green, Gloucestershire

NEW EBOOK - The Battle of Nibley Green, Gloucestershire

On a spring morning in 1470 the peace of Gloucestershire was shattered by the sounds of battle. The Wars of the Roses had come to this peaceful corner of southwestern England in spectacular and bloody fashion.

But the battle fought at Nibley Green had very little to do with the dispute between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. The fate of the throne was not at issue at Nibley Green, nor were the underlying social tensions between the ancient landed aristocracy and newly rich mercantile classes that lurked behind the dynastic dispute. No, the fight at Nibley Green might have been dressed up as a principled stand over support for the rightful king (whoever he was) but in reality it was a brutal affair fought to settle a local dispute between local aristocrats and local magnates.

Nibley Green has, perhaps rightly, been identified as the last of the private battles that had been such a feature of medieval England. As such it reveals much about late medieval socieety, and the ways in which men went about fighting battles in that bloody era.

About the Author
Leonard James is an author of military books. He comes from a military family that has fought in every major war since at least the Crimean War, and probably before that. His forebears were mostly cavalrymen, though his father served in the RAF. Leonard has made a particular study of battlefields in Britain, walking over dozens of them to get an eye for ground. He has also handled genuine and replica weapons to better understand the use of pre-modern weapons and the men who wielded them.

NEW EBOOK - Top Ten Reasons to Leave the EU [Kindle Edition]

NEW EBOOK - Top Ten Reasons to Leave the EU [Kindle Edition]

Much has been written about Britain’s unhappy relationship with the European Union, but although a referendum is looking increasingly likely in the next few years, many people remain unaware of just how much damage the EU has done to this country. This short and easy-to-read book sets out the main issues clearly and succinctly, spelling out the benefits of regaining our independence. An ideal for anyone still in the dark about the EU or undecided how to vote if we are given the chance to regain our freedom.

John Petley: Biography
John Petley is somewhat of a latecomer to politics. He read music at Oxford before pursuing a career in IT, interrupted by two years at Moorlands Bible College, where he studied for a diploma in applied theology.
His political involvement began in 2000 when he was handed a leaflet about the European Union. This resulted in him joining UKIP and standing as the party’s candidate for the Lewes constituency in the 2005 General Election. He then worked for two years as a researcher in the European Parliament in Brussels.
Although not currently a member of any political party, John is still passionate in his belief that the UK should withdraw from the EU. His research paper On the Wrong Track, which highlighted the growing interference of Brussels in the UK railway network, was published by the Bruges Group in 2009. He is currently editor of Freedom Today, the quarterly magazine of The Freedom Association, which regularly features articles from several leading proponents of UK withdrawal.
Outside of politics, John enjoys steam trains, classical music, keeping guinea pigs, gardening and country walks. He is married to Katherine and lives in Gloucestershire. An Evangelical Christian, he preaches from time to time in various churches in the south of England.

NEW - The Sassenach's Escape Manual: A (Mostly) Impartial Guide to Scottish Identity & Independence

NEW - The Sassenach's Escape Manual: A (Mostly) Impartial Guide to Scottish Identity & Independence

So, you’re trying to explain to a Sassenach the issues around Scottish Independence and Devolution. Or you’re an
Englishman stuck in a pub in Glasgow faced by irate locals.
Will Scotland remain a member of the EU? What currency will you spend in Scottish shops? What will happen to cross border trade between England and Scotland? What if the Shetlands want to rejoin Norway? And just how will the Loch Ness Monster survive (if she exists)?
This wee tome gives the answers in a lively and easy to understand fashion while drawing on Scottish history and tradition. A joint venture between a Sassenach, seeking to understand, a Highlander keen to explain and a Glaswegian who sees both sides, this book explains in wry terms the issues confronting Scotland today.

The politicians and pundits are obsessed on the debate about where Scotland fits into the national jigsaw called the United Kingdom - and on Scotland’s place in the world. But far too often the debate is couched in jargon or assumes the reader knows the background to issues that can be complex, involved and demand specialist knowledge.
And if Scotland does vote for independence the reverberations will be felt not only across Britain, but also across the EU and the world. It is time people woke up to the potential problems, opportunities and pitfalls.

NEW ebook - The Future's Bright, the Future's Global [Kindle Edition]

NEW ebook -  The Future's Bright, the Future's Global [Kindle Edition]

If Britain is to take control of its destiny it had better hurry up. Time is running out.

This important new study looks at the economic, regulatory and demographic challenges facing Britain in the early 21st Century. The author argues that a dynamic new global market has opened up right at the time that the EU market is becoming more regulatory. And Britain is being dragged down by the EU at precisely the time it should be setting out to embrace the world.

While the future trend among most nations, certainly those that enjoy free trade, is to become more intertwined with trade and commerce while ditching cumbersome international bodies overlooking these agreements, Britain is stuck in the sclerotic embrace of the EU with its heavy regulations, anti-free trade policies and oppressive government controls.

In essence this is a story about the rise of global trade a relative to the decline of the EU region. It will look forward to 2050, to economic and population predications. It shows that the UK needs to act fast to benefit from the changing world.

1066 Harold’s Way - A Guidebook to the New Long Distance Footpath from London to Hastings

1066 Harold’s Way - A Guidebook to the New Long Distance Footpath from London to Hastings

Written by an experienced walker and historian, this book follows the new “Harold’s Way” footpath route through London, Kent and Sussex.
1066 Harold’s Way is a new 100 mile long distance walk from Westminster Abbey to Battle Abbey, East Sussex tracing the probable route of King Harold’s journey to the Battle of Hastings.
1066 Harold’s Way creates an alternative north – south destination for walkers and is to be seen as an option to existing long distance footpaths such as the North Downs Way and the South Downs Way to the west. Perhaps this epic, historic, emotive and challenging walk.
The Walk has been produced with the support of Kent County Council, Sussex County Council and Stagecoach buses, and in association with The Long Distance Walkers Association, Kent Area Ramblers and Rother Ramblers.
This book follows the Walk, breaking it down into 10 bite-sized chunks for leisure walkers, with each section ending at a public transport link to take the walker back to the start. The difficulty of each section is carefully appraised, maps are included along with historical data on the events of 1066 and notes about sights passed by the walker.

About the Author
David Clarke was involved in creating the “1066 Harold’s Way” footpath. He is an experienced walker and historian who has done much to reappraise the military skills and decisions of Harold in that fateful autumn of 1066 when the future of England hung in the balance.

NEW EBOOK - The Deadliest Weapons of World War 1

NEW EBOOK -  The Deadliest Weapons of World War 1

The First World War, fought between 1914 and 1918, was one of the deadliest conflicts in history. More than 16 million people were killed. Soldiers were mown down by machine guns or they were choked to death by poison gas. Civilians were blown to pieces by bombs dropped from giant airships. Ocean liners were sunk by torpedoes, leaving passengers to drown in the icy waters of the Atlantic.
The common factor in all this is technology – new technology, new weapons, new ways of killing people. This short ebook tells you everything you need to know about the ten deadliest weapons of World War 1.

NEW EBOOK - The Battle of Bailen, 1808

NEW EBOOK - The Battle of Bailen, 1808

The Battle of Bailen set Europe alight. For years the magnificent, tough and superbly equipped armies of Napoleon Bonaparte had marched unchecked across Europe. But at Bailen a French army was fought to a standstill and forced to surrender by a small Spanish force led by an inexperienced commander.

The blow to French prestige was immense. All across Europe commanders began wondering if they too could beat the armies of the Emperor Napoleon.

In Spain the battle had a catastrophic impact on the French campaign of conquest. The French armies fell back to defensive positions while Spanish men flocked to the colours or took to the hills as guerrilas. Bailen was one of the truly decisive battles of history.

The Battle of Bailen was fought as part of the Peninsular War that pitched Britain’s Duke of Wellington against Napoleon’s French Marshals.

Written by a military author of great experience, this book explains the way battles were fought two centuries ago and explains the course of the action in an accessible but authoritative style.

This lavishly illustrated ebook is a must for anyone interested in the Peninsular War. It includes profiles of the commanders, analysis of tactics and weapons and an outline of the Peninsular War as well as following the course of the siege.

This book forms part of the Bretwalda Battles series which features numerous battles.

NEW EBOOK - The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo (Bretwalda Battles)

NEW EBOOK -  The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo (Bretwalda Battles)

The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo was a savage affair, fought as part of the Peninsular War that pitched Britain’s Duke of Wellington against Napoleon’s French Marshals.

The fortress city of Ciudad Rodgrio blocked the route that Wellington wished to use to march his combined British-Portuguese Army into Spain and start the liberation of that country from French occupation. If his invasion was to succeed he needed to take the city - but it’s defences were among the strongest and most modern in Europe.

As Wellington settled down to the slow business of siege warfare he learned that a French relief army was on its way. If he was to take the city he would have to do so quickly - and that meant a storm. The scene was set for one of the classic siege operations of the Napoleonic Wars.

The Betty Hill Star Map

On the night of 19/20 September, 1961, on their way home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire from a short break in Canada, something happened to Betty and Barney Hill that began a new controversy in UFO research that continues even today. While modern polls show that as many as four million Americans could believe they might have been abducted by aliens, back in 1966 when the first book detailing the Hill case The Interrupted Journey was first published, the New England couple’s claims of alien contact were almost unheard of. There had been the famous Contactees of the 1950s, men and women who claimed they had been visited by the human looking occupants of flying saucers with warnings about nuclear war and environmental concerns. But the experiences of the Hills were completely different, reporting beings that were obviously not human, and had no such messages.
Instead under hypothesis the Hill’s told of how they were kidnapped and experimented on by short humanoid beings aboard a “cigar shaped ” craft that had pursued the couple that September night as they traveled home on Route 3 between Lancaster and Concord. The alien abduction phenomenon was born.
There are two major explanations often given to explain the Hills’ recollections under hypnosis. The first offered by some...

NEW BOOK - Titanic, the Rescue Mission

NEW BOOK - Titanic, the Rescue Mission

While the RMS Titanic was sinking more than a dozen ships were racing to the rescue. This is the story of the rescue mission, including the search for bodies that followed.
The story of the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic is well known, but less well known today are the frantic efforts made by more than a dozen ships to get to her to rescue her passengers and crew. Although the Cunard liner “Carpathia” was first on the scene, she was joined by three other ships within a couple of hours, and others were on their way.
We read about the Russian cook preparing vast gallons of vegetable soup for survivors, the rescue ship that nearly hit an iceberg itself and the confusion over the radio waves as messages were sent, lost or misinterpreted. Above all we read of the gallant efforts of hundreds of seamen desperate to obey the rules of the sea and go to the rescue.
Oliver Hayes has gone back to contemporary newspaper reports, personal letters and the official inquiries held on both sides of the Atlantic to research this book. The result is a meticulously researched volume detailing the exciting story of the rescue mission to save the Titanic.
The original painting “Carpathia to the Rescue” featured in the book is available as a print signed by the artist.
